The Painted Veil

Wow. We watched this movie last night and I can't stop thinking about it. It was a heart-wrenching, beautiful love story. The people who write lame romantic comedies could take a lesson from the screenwriters of this. In my opinion, they depicted two flawed people falling in love very realistically. The acting was incredible. Maybe I want to be Naomi Watts just a little bit too much (I think we have the same teeth-does that count?) And I might be in love with Edward Norton now. The music was awesome. Now I know why you gave me the soundtrack, Mom! So, just my two cents about a movie nobody saw last year. Watch it and tell me what you think. But just a warning-you sort of need to have a high tolerance for scenes showing cholera patients--yikes!

Also, if anyone knows the meaning behind the title, let me know because Ben and I never really figured it out. Maybe I should read the book...

I agree. The plot was really well balanced, creating a character that at first you don't like, then you sympathize with, then root for. Likewise, the accents weren't awful and jarring, like so many movies with non-British actors playing British roles. I, too, like Watts, and am glad she can get over a train wreck like King Kong and make a meaningful movie.

I have to admit though, the plot was rather predictable. I had to laugh, because after watching the trailer, I quickly summarized the movie in a few sentences, and it turned out exactly as I predicted. Maybe that's not always a bad thing, but in this case, it made it hard to enjoy the calm, happy parts in between the beginning and expected outcome.

Why are you blogging instead of studying?

I disagree about King Kong--I loved Naomi in it--she was breathtaking--I liked the movie, too.

Not everyone has your talent for predicting plots, and even if they do, I think they will enjoy the classic story line told in a very new setting.

I have thought you guys look alike before. I liked King Kong too. I mean I didn't love the movie but I didn't think it was terrible, and I especially thought Naomi did a great acting job.

I saw the painted veil on the way to europe and I really enjoyed it too. No idea about the title. Probly something in the book would explain it, but I heard the book is bad and has a totally different ending. I like Edward Norton. Also watched Miss Potter on the flight. Starts off weird but gets way better.

Thanks for the recommendation...I think my husband will actually see it too because Edward Norton is one of his faves.

Oh yeah, and you do look a lot like Naomi.

Wow! It's nice to see that you watched one of my recommendations!! I just saw several other amazing movies in these last two weeks of "heck", but they are probably rated R, so you can't see them, but you should check to see...

One is "The Tunnel" (German movie)
"After the Wedding" (Norwegian?), "Very Annie Mary" (Welsh), "The Lives of Others" (German)
"The Italian" (about a darling little orphan boy--rated PG-13!) and "Stephanie Daley" with one of my favorite actresses, Tilda Swinton...

I feel special that I get to see all the great movies that no one else seems to see...

And by the way, Hailey----are you trying to keep up with those "super bloggers"? Heh, heh...

You are doing a good job!
