At a Loss

Here's the scenario: it's 11:30 PM, everyone's asleep but me, when all of a sudden both twins begin screaming at the top of their lungs. I rush into the room and am not sure what to do. I go back and forth between each screaming girl and find nothing noticeably wrong. The diapers are dry, it's not too hot or cold, no one's leg is caught in the crib slat. They are both half asleep and just happen to be experiencing the same nightmare at the same time. Normally, in this circumstance, Ben takes one baby and I take the other and the problem is solved. However, each time I go to comfort one girl, the neglected one cries even harder. I even try taking them both out to sit on the couch with me, but that fails miserably. So what in the world do I do? I finally had to leave the room and I just turned off the monitor. I can hear the screams and thumps upstairs and I'm just hoping it subsides. Seriously, does anyone have any suggestions? I've got 8 weeks to go and it's bound to happen again!

This single mom gig is a bit out of control. I don't think mixing it with twins necessarily makes the best formula for a sane person. Please try to avoid it. And please let the girls not learn to climb out of their cribs until Ben comes home again.

Wish me luck...

P.S. Ethan begged to sleep in my bed and so I finally gave in. About an hour ago, I hear a loud thump and he has fallen out of the bed on to the hardwood floor. He doesn't cry but is incredibly disoriented and keeps walking around in circles and making jerky movements. Not only that, but I find that he has peed in my bed. He is so banished back to his own room, and could this night BE any more awesome? Mila just needs to have to throw up, and it will be one for the record books. Sidenote: Mila is hilarious when she throws up, screaming "Oh no! I can't take this! Anything but this! I've got to do this alone, Mom!!" DRAMA EXTRAORDINAIRE. I think the whole neighborhood wakes up.

Good night?

Yes. That is very bad. Keep that monitor turned off. A little benadryl for the kiddies never hurt anyone. You take some too.

Oh man, what a night! I think given the situation, you handled it fine. No one is gonna get hurt crying...it's just not fun to listen to! Eventually one will fall asleep and then you can handle the other--maybe? Both my kids have done this to me at the same time in the past and it's so frustrating...hearing two in need but only having so many hands! Hang in there!

What a miserable and crazy night! Sorry Hailey. If I were in town I'd take them today so you could nap! Hang in there! :)

Oh, I feel for you! Please let the next 8 weeks go by FAST.

Maybe your fabulous Mom needs to come out to help you and then we could meet the fantastic Swaneesinger

Sounds like you need a road trip to AZ! Bring the kiddos down here and we'll let the twins (both sets) entertain themselves.

Yeah, you should come see us. I have a giant inflatable in my white trash backyard for the kids. It has TWO slides!

And if they learn to climb out, I have two words: CRIB TENTS. I think Melanie thinks I am a bad parent cause of the baby jails I use, but I sleep peacefully, knowing no one is up eating poison in the middle of the night.

Oh, dude. That is a horrible night. Cole gets his leg stuck in the crib slat all the time. I'm thisclose to surrounding his crib with plexiglass to prevent another wedged appendage. I asked my sister what she does in a similar situation (she has twins, boy and a girl, they are 5), and she said that you did what every mom with twins has to do. You try to comfort each, both...it's just hard. And having them try to cry it out and go back to sleep is sometimes the only option you have!

Perhaps another girls night will make everything better?

Heh, heh! I hate to laugh, but that last one about Mila was so spot on!!

Sorry, my dearest girl----look on the bright side----you will have the last three weeks terrorizing our house!

And----yes, I think that if all the things are covered---dry diapers, no broken or caught limbs, etc.---then you need to let them cry---it tears at your heart, but its for the best.

Hang in there---love you tons!

You are super mom! Having the Dad be gone for long periods of time is never fun.

Oh- more great news... school is out soon! So you'll be the 1 woman travelling Mom show 24-7.

Happy parenting.

Did you ever get any sleep? I remember one time when I threatened to throw Elly in the garbage. It really didn't work. Good luck!

geez, can't a man leave his wife and kids for ten weeks and live it up in manhattan without talk of diamonds and throwing children in the garbage? ;) hang in there.
